Rice cracker
2. Let’s make rustic sweets
Secondly, let me introduce three unique programs. By participating in them, you can vividly enjoy the world of Japanese rustic sweets other than rice cracker.
1) Ohagi making
【Niigata / Myoko】
Why don’t you experience making traditional Japanese cakes (Ohagi)? Myoko‘s grandma will teach you from scratch. Souvenirs include glutinous rice, perilla powder, and red beans and the recipe. With the recipe, you can reproduce it even when you go home!
“Ohagi” has been considered as a food to dispel evil spirits and offered to ancestors on the equinoctial week. Why don’t you experience the famous “Ohagi” at Tabataya, a long-established inn founded in 1905?
There are two types of “Ohagi“, “Anko” and “Egoma“. After making it, it’s a relaxing tea time. Even after returning home, it comes with a recipe that you can enjoy making rice cakes and a souvenir of ingredients for rice cakes.
2) Jomon Oyaki making
【Nagano / Nozawa Onsen Village】
Oyaki has a long history. During the late Jōmon period (10,000 B.C.- 300 B.C.), processed foods such as oyaki were made using grains and they are thought to be the prototype of oyaki. When earthenware from the middle of the Jomon period was excavated, traces of kneading and baking powder were found. Experience of making local cuisine includes a short story of the village’s food culture that has continued since ancient times. Why don’t you get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life with those who grew up in the small village? Maybe the slow life of the village reminds you of the life of the villagers dating back 4500 years.
We mainly use seasonal vegetables and local ingredients.
Start by making the dough. You also use flour made from rice grown in the village.
3) Taiyaki making
【Tokyo / Asakusa】
In about 60 minutes of experience, you will be asked to make 6 taiyaki per person. You can participate empty-handed because all the necessary tools and various ingredients are prepared in advance. But you can also bring in your favorite ingredients.
After making it, please enjoy the delicious freshly made Taiyaki! You can also enjoy taking pictures and videos with your family and friends.
